Japanese watchmaker Seiko has confirmed that a ransomware attack earlier this year exposed sensitive customer data. The company says that the attack affected 60,000 individuals, including customers, employees, business partners, and job applicants.
The leaked data includes names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, and contact information for counterparties in business transactions. Seiko says that no credit card information was compromised.
The ransomware attack was carried out by the BlackCat/ALPHV ransomware gang, which listed Seiko on its extortion site in August 2023. The gang claimed to have stolen production plans, employee passport scans, new model release plans, specialized lab test results, and confidential technical schematics of existent and upcoming Seiko watches.
Seiko says that it is still investigating the attack but has confirmed that the leaked data is authentic. The company is notifying affected individuals and has taken steps to improve its security posture.
