OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says the company is not planning to go public in 2026, calling the current moment an “ill-advised” time for an IPO as concerns around AI safety continue to grow.
In a recent interview, Altman said OpenAI is “not rushing into an IPO” and does not feel pressure to take the company public. He said the company has previously indicated that it would pursue an IPO when it is ready, but added that he would not expect that to happen in 2026.
Altman’s comments came during a wide-ranging interview that covered several topics, including the recent Hugging Face hacking incident, recursive self-improvement and the possibility of developing AI systems that could eventually move beyond human control.
When asked whether it was possible to build an AI that goes beyond human control, Altman said it was “absolutely” possible. He also said OpenAI would take steps to prevent that from happening, including potentially pausing AI training if necessary.
Altman stressed that there are risks that should not be taken on behalf of humanity, highlighting the importance of safety as AI systems become increasingly capable.
