Russian government hackers are believed to be behind a major cyberattack on the U.S. federal court’s electronic filing systems, according to reports.
The breach targeted PACER and CM/ECF, platforms used to file and access court documents. Officials say the hackers may have gained access to sealed records, including sensitive criminal case files.
The attack appears to have focused on cases involving people with Russian or Eastern European surnames and certain midlevel criminal cases. Security experts warn that exposing sealed documents could put lives at risk and harm ongoing investigations.
Court officials have already taken steps to protect sensitive information, including filing certain criminal cases through a separate offline system. Lawmakers were quietly briefed about the breach earlier this month, and investigators are continuing to assess the full scope of the damage.
