Reddit has started testing a new verification system that gives certain users a gray checkmark next to their username.
The company says this is part of a limited alpha test, and only a small group of public figures and trusted partners have been selected for now. Their verified status will appear across the platform, including profiles, communities, feeds, post pages, and search results.
For this early test, users can’t apply for verification. The selected accounts must opt in, follow Reddit’s rules, and actively participate on the platform. Reddit also says the verification badge won’t come with any special privileges. Businesses that already have the “Official” label introduced in 2023 will see that tag replaced with the new gray checkmark.
Reddit explained that the platform’s culture of pseudonyms remains important, and verification will not change that. The company says the system is voluntary and not meant to signal importance or status. Instead, the goal is to reduce confusion for users and make things easier for moderators, who often verify identities manually.
