Qantas, Australia’s largest airline, has confirmed that a major data breach has exposed the personal information of around six million passengers.
In a statement on Wednesday, the airline said the breach happened after a cybercriminal accessed one of its call centers on June 30. The hacker stole sensitive customer data, including names, email addresses, phone numbers, birthdates, and frequent flyer numbers.
This is the latest in a string of cyberattacks hitting major airlines. In the past few weeks, both WestJet (Canada) and Hawaiian Airlines reported similar data breaches. Experts say these attacks could be connected to a hacker group known as Scattered Spider, which has been targeting large companies through advanced social engineering tactics.
However, Google’s security team at Mandiant says it’s still too early to confirm if Scattered Spider was behind the Qantas breach. They warn that airlines everywhere should stay alert and strengthen their defenses against these kinds of threats.
Qantas says it’s working with cybersecurity experts to investigate the breach and is contacting affected customers.
