The Pentagon has added customized versions of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and xAI’s Grok to its secure generative AI platform, giving millions of U.S. military and civilian personnel access to commercial AI tools adapted for government use.
ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government are now available through GenAI.mil, a centralized portal launched last year by the Department of Defense. The platform is designed to provide employees with access to advanced commercial AI models without requiring sensitive government information to pass through standard consumer versions of these services.
Unlike consumer AI products, the military versions are designed with government security requirements in mind and are exempt from certain types of data collection associated with consumer technology.
The Pentagon says GenAI.mil has already become widely used across the department. More than 1.7 million unique users have reportedly accessed the platform out of roughly 3 million Department of Defense personnel.
ChatGPT Mil comes through OpenAI’s OpenAI for Government program and is designed to provide an experience similar to commercial ChatGPT. According to the Defense Department, it will support features including chat, file handling, projects and custom GPTs. Its initial applications include routine unclassified work such as administration, logistics, planning and policy-related tasks, with additional capabilities expected to be introduced later.
Grok for Government, meanwhile, is being positioned for a wider range of military and operational uses. The Defense Department says the system could help personnel improve productivity, maintain institutional knowledge and collaborate more securely and efficiently.
Potential applications include market research for acquisition teams and supply-chain management for logistics personnel. The Pentagon says these capabilities could help military personnel complete missions more quickly and accurately across different operational environments.
The additions also come amid the Pentagon’s ongoing dispute with Anthropic, whose Claude AI model is notably absent from GenAI.mil. The Trump administration designated Anthropic a supply-chain risk after the company resisted unrestricted military use of its technology and sought to maintain certain safety restrictions. Anthropic is challenging the designation in court.

Deals involving Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Nvidia and Reflection AI are part of the department’s broader effort to deploy advanced AI systems across government and classified environments.
