OpenAI’s new social AI video app, Sora, has crossed over one million downloads in less than five days since its launch.

Sora’s head, Bill Peebles said the app hit this milestone faster than ChatGPT did at launch, even though it is still invite-only.

The Sora app was launched for iOS on September 30 and lets users scroll through and create AI-generated videos using OpenAI’s new Sora 2 model. It also includes a “cameos” feature that allows users to insert themselves or friends into AI videos. The app has quickly gained attention for its mix of memes, experimental clips, and playful AI content.

However, the app has also faced criticism after users began creating videos with copyrighted characters in inappropriate or brand-unfriendly situations. In response, OpenAI said it is giving copyright holders more control and allowing users to decide how their likeness is used in Sora.

Bill Peebles said the team is working hard to handle the app’s fast growth and will soon roll out more updates and fixes to improve moderation. The Sora app is currently available only in the US and Canada and is now sitting at the top of Apple’s App Store charts.
