OpenAI has introduced a new AI model called GPT-5.6 Cyber, designed specifically for cybersecurity work such as vulnerability research, penetration testing and incident response.
The company says GPT-5.6 Cyber will not be available directly to regular users because of the security risks associated with highly capable cyber-focused AI models. Instead, OpenAI is providing access to selected companies and cybersecurity providers that can use the technology within their existing security products and professional services.
According to OpenAI, selected companies include Accenture, IBM, Capgemini, Cognizant, EY, KPMG, PwC, NCC Group and SpecterOps. The company is also working with security vendors including Palo Alto Networks, CrowdStrike, Cisco, Sophos, Akamai, Fortinet and Cloudflare.
OpenAI says the goal is to put its advanced cyber capabilities in the hands of experienced defenders while keeping the underlying models under controlled access. Approved partners can use the models during security engagements rather than transferring direct access to their customers.
The company says the models can help security teams discover vulnerabilities, determine whether weaknesses can actually be exploited, identify affected systems, develop fixes and help deploy those fixes into production.
Depending on the engagement, the technology can be used for vulnerability discovery and validation, red-team exercises, penetration testing, incident response and remediation across enterprise environments.
OpenAI is offering these capabilities through a program called Daybreak Access, which includes two levels called Daybreak Blue and Daybreak Red. Blue is designed for a broad range of defensive cybersecurity tasks, while Red is intended for more specialized work that requires tighter controls and oversight.
OpenAI says safeguards can include identity verification, clearly defined testing boundaries, logging, monitoring and human oversight. The company also says customers do not receive direct access to the underlying models.
Instead, approved partners remain responsible for using the models during security engagements. They can work with organizations to define testing boundaries, review the results and use their own cybersecurity expertise before taking action.
The approach allows enterprises to benefit from advanced AI-powered security tools without having to develop their own specialized cybersecurity AI systems.
OpenAI says cybersecurity companies and consulting firms can apply to become Daybreak Cyber Partners. Organizations interested in using the technology can also access the capabilities through participating security providers.
