OpenAI is set to publicly launch GPT-5.6 on Thursday after postponing its wider release last month at the request of the U.S. government over national security concerns.

The public rollout follows additional testing and discussions between OpenAI and U.S. officials, with the Trump administration ultimately approving a broader release of the model. Before receiving approval, OpenAI limited GPT-5.6 access to a small group of vetted partners whose identities were shared with the government.
Alongside its flagship GPT-5.6 Sol model, OpenAI will also introduce two lower-cost variants named Terra and Luna. The company has previously highlighted improvements in coding, biology, cybersecurity, and agentic capabilities, saying GPT-5.6 Sol performs competitively with Anthropic’s Mythos Preview on cybersecurity benchmarks.
The release comes amid growing competition between the United States and China to develop increasingly powerful AI systems. Governments on both sides have expressed concerns that frontier AI models could be exploited to discover software vulnerabilities, automate sophisticated cyberattacks, or support military and intelligence operations. As a result, authorities have introduced additional oversight for the deployment of the most advanced AI technologies.
The launch also follows recent restrictions placed on advanced AI models from rival AI company Anthropic. Earlier this year, Anthropic temporarily suspended public access to its Mythos 5 and Fable 5 models after a U.S. export control order, before restoring availability once additional safeguards were implemented.
Meanwhile, billionaire Elon Musk announced that his AI company, SpaceXAI, is also making its latest Grok 4.5 model publicly available, further intensifying competition among leading AI developers.
