OpenAI has entered into a massive $38 billion partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS), gaining access to “hundreds of thousands” of Nvidia GPUs to train and power its artificial intelligence models.
The seven-year deal marks a major shift in OpenAI’s cloud strategy, as Microsoft’s exclusive grip on the company begins to loosen.
According to the announcement, OpenAI will immediately begin using AWS compute for model training. The deployment of this infrastructure is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, with plans to expand even further in 2027 and beyond.
This move follows OpenAI’s recent corporate restructuring and a revised agreement with Microsoft. Under that deal, Microsoft retains rights to OpenAI’s technology until the company achieves artificial general intelligence (AGI). However, OpenAI now has more freedom to collaborate with third parties and develop select open-weight models independently.
Interestingly, while the AWS deal is huge, it’s still smaller than OpenAI’s $250 billion commitment to Microsoft’s Azure services and a $300 billion agreement with Oracle. Meanwhile, Amazon continues to invest heavily in AI by funding competitors like Anthropic.
The new deal underscores OpenAI’s strategy to diversify its cloud partnerships, ensuring it has the computing power and flexibility needed to train increasingly advanced AI systems.
