OpenAI has announced that its future data centers will pay for their own energy needs and work to reduce water usage.
The company said its operations will not increase local electricity bills and promised to support energy infrastructure upgrades where needed. “We’re being good neighbors,” OpenAI said, responding to growing public concern about the impact of large AI data centers.
The company said it will either secure its own power supplies or fund local grid improvements so nearby communities are not affected. OpenAI also said it will work closely with local governments and residents to reduce disruption from its Stargate data center projects, though it did not share exact technical details.
Water use is another major concern, as data centers often use large amounts of clean drinking water for cooling. OpenAI said it plans to reduce this through better cooling technology and more efficient AI system design. The goal is to lower dependence on water while still keeping systems running safely.
