OpenAI is working on its next major foundational model, GPT-5, which aims to unify multiple capabilities under one powerful system.

In a recent Reddit AMA, OpenAI VP Jerry Tworek revealed that GPT-5 is being designed to make all current models better while reducing the need to switch between them.

Currently, ChatGPT users can choose from multiple models like GPT-4, DALL-E, and Codex—often with overlapping or unclear naming. GPT-5 will likely streamline these experiences, combining features like multimodal input, improved reasoning, and coding assistance.

“GPT-5 is our next foundational model that is meant to just make everything our models can currently do better and with less model switching,” Tworek wrote on Reddit.

OpenAI is also focusing on evolving its Codex-1 model, which powers AI-assisted coding in ChatGPT. Built on top of the O3 reasoning model, Codex-1 is expected to receive updates that will make it the best coding model for developers.

As OpenAI pushes toward a unified and smarter AI future, GPT-5 could mark a significant leap in usability and performance across a wide range of tasks.
