OpenAI is rolling out new parental controls for ChatGPT on web and mobile starting Monday, following a lawsuit filed by parents of a teenager who died by suicide after allegedly receiving self-harm guidance from the chatbot.
The new system allows parents and teenagers to link their accounts, with controls activating only once both parties accept the invitation. Once enabled, parents can:
- Limit exposure to sensitive content
- Decide whether ChatGPT remembers past chats
- Choose if conversations can be used to train OpenAI’s models
- Set quiet hours to restrict access at certain times
- Disable voice mode, image generation, and editing
OpenAI emphasized that parents will not have access to a teen’s chat transcripts. In rare cases where reviewers detect a serious safety risk, parents may be notified with only the information needed to ensure the teen’s safety. Parents will also be alerted if a teen unlinks their account.
