OpenAI has introduced its first hardware product, but it is not the long-rumored AI device being developed with former Apple designer Jony Ive.

Instead, the company has launched Codex Micro, a compact controller created specifically for its AI coding platform, Codex.

The new device is the result of a collaboration between OpenAI and keyboard manufacturer Work Louder. Designed for developers using Codex, the controller provides a more hands-on way to monitor and interact with AI coding agents while they work on software projects.

Codex Micro features a compact square design with 13 mechanical keys, a joystick, a rotary dial, and a touch sensor. The layout closely resembles Work Louder’s existing Creator Micro 2 controller, although this version has been customized for Codex users with dedicated functions and AI-focused controls.

One of the device’s standout features is a row of six illuminated keys that display the live status of Codex tasks. Different colors indicate whether an AI agent is actively working, waiting for feedback, has completed a task, or has encountered an error, allowing developers to check progress without constantly looking at their computer screen.

The controller also includes programmable command keys that can be assigned to frequently used actions such as push-to-talk, sending prompts, accepting or rejecting AI-generated code changes, and other common workflows. Buyers will also receive 32 additional keycaps featuring Codex-themed icons for further customization.

OpenAI says Codex Micro will be sold as a limited-edition product for $230 through Supply Co while supplies last. The company has not revealed how many units will be available.

Although this marks OpenAI’s first commercial hardware release, it is separate from the company’s larger hardware ambitions. Reports have suggested OpenAI is also developing a standalone AI device with Jony Ive, but that project remains under development and has recently faced legal challenges.
