OpenAI has introduced new features to its Sora video app, making it easier for users to create and share AI-generated videos.
One of the biggest updates is the new “character cameos” feature, which allows people to turn almost anything into a reusable avatar. These avatars can appear in different videos, whether they’re based on people, pets, drawings, or even toys.
OpenAI explained that once a character is created, users can choose how it’s shared. Each character has its own permissions, meaning it can be kept private, shared with friends, or made available to everyone on Sora. Users can also give their characters names, handles, and tags to easily include them in videos.
This update builds on Sora’s earlier feature that allowed users to make AI-generated versions of themselves, which others could use with permission. The new version expands that idea to include fictional or creative characters. However, OpenAI has not yet clarified how realistic these avatars can be or how the app distinguishes between AI-created people and real ones. Interestingly, the update comes shortly after celebrity video platform Cameo filed a lawsuit against OpenAI for using the word “cameo” in its app.
Alongside character cameos, Sora is also adding tools for video stitching, which lets users combine several clips into a longer video. The app now features leaderboards too, showing the most popular videos, remixes, and characters created by users.
To encourage more people to try the new features, OpenAI has made Sora easier to access. For a limited time, users in the United States, Canada, Japan, and Korea can sign up without needing an invitation code.
