OpenAI has decided to delay the launch of ChatGPT’s expected “adult mode,” a feature that was rumored to arrive sometime this quarter.

The company says it wants to prioritize improvements that will benefit more users before releasing the new option.

An OpenAI spokesperson told former Verge reporter Alex Heath that the delay is intentional. According to the company, the team is currently focusing on more important upgrades across the platform.

Those priorities include improving the model’s intelligence, making personality responses better, adding stronger personalization, and building a more proactive user experience. OpenAI believes these improvements will provide greater value to the majority of users compared to releasing adult mode right now.

Adult mode was expected to introduce new settings designed specifically for mature audiences. While the company has not shared detailed information about how the feature would work, it was widely discussed as a way to allow broader conversations and more flexible content settings.

For now, OpenAI has not announced a new release timeline. The company’s immediate focus remains on strengthening ChatGPT’s core capabilities and making the assistant more helpful and responsive for everyday use.
