OpenAI is making its highly anticipated entry into the search market with SearchGPT, an AI-powered search engine designed to provide real-time access to information across the internet.

What is SearchGPT?

SearchGPT is OpenAI’s latest innovation, building on the success of its GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) models. Designed to understand and interpret user queries in a more sophisticated manner than traditional search engines, SearchGPT aims to provide answers that are not only relevant but also contextually appropriate.

SearchGPT greets users with a large textbox asking, “What are you looking for?” Unlike traditional search engines that return a simple list of links, SearchGPT organizes and contextualizes the results. For instance, if you search for music festivals, SearchGPT summarizes its findings and provides short descriptions of each event, followed by attribution links.

In another example, SearchGPT explains the best time to plant tomatoes and offers details on different tomato varieties. After the initial results, users can ask follow-up questions or click on the sidebar to explore other relevant links.

SearchGPT also includes a feature called “visual answers,” although specific details about this functionality were not available at the time of publication.

By integrating advanced AI capabilities, SearchGPT aims to revolutionize the search experience, offering users more meaningful and organized results.

SearchGPT is just a “prototype” for now. The service is powered by the GPT-4 family of models and will only be accessible to 10,000 test users at launch.
