OpenAI is rolling out a new age prediction model in ChatGPT to guess whether a user is an adult or a teenager.

Based on this prediction, ChatGPT can apply extra safety rules to prevent teens from seeing harmful, adult, or illegal content. The goal is to protect users under 18, especially those using ChatGPT without parental consent.

This system does not ask your age directly at first. Instead, it looks at patterns like the topics you talk about and the times you usually use ChatGPT. Using this behavior, the AI predicts whether you are likely an adult or a teen. OpenAI admits this model is not perfect and may sometimes wrongly flag adults as teenagers.

If you are 18 or older and get placed into the under-18 experience by mistake, you can verify your age at chatgpt.com/verify_age. You may be asked to take a live selfie or upload a government ID like a passport or driving license. OpenAI says its partner, Persona, deletes your ID or selfie within 7 days after verification.

For users marked as under 18, ChatGPT will still work for learning and creativity, but some topics will be restricted. These include graphic violence, gore, viral dangerous challenges, extreme beauty standards, unhealthy dieting, and body-shaming content. This age-based system is rolling out globally and will automatically apply to all ChatGPT accounts.
