Google has announced a major update to Google Home that fixes several long-standing issues and introduces a powerful new feature called Live Search.
The update was shared by Anish Kattukaran, the head of Google Home, and it brings smarter controls and better camera intelligence to the platform.
The biggest highlight is Live Search for security cameras. Until now, Gemini could only answer questions about events that had already happened. With this update, it can understand and describe what your cameras are seeing in real time. For example, you can ask, “Hey Google, is there a car in the driveway?” or even check something specific, like whether your child is wearing a helmet. Gemini will look at the live camera feed and respond based on what it sees at that moment.
This feature is part of the Google Home Premium Advanced plan, which costs $20 per month or $200 per year.
Google is also upgrading the AI models behind Gemini for Home. The company says this should improve the accuracy and quality of answers to general questions. It should also make it easier to play newly released songs without confusion.
Another improvement focuses on better understanding context. In the past, some voice commands could trigger more devices than you intended. Now, if you say “turn off the kitchen,” Google Home will switch off only the lights in that room instead of every smart device connected there. Similarly, saying “turn off all the lights” will apply only to your current location. It will no longer affect lights in other properties you manage, such as a vacation home or a family member’s house.

Overall, this update makes Google Home feel smarter and more practical in daily use. With real-time camera descriptions and improved voice controls, Gemini is becoming a more capable assistant inside the smart home.
