Microsoft has announced that it will stop offering its Authenticator app’s password storage and autofill feature

This change will begin in June 2025 and be fully completed by August 1, 2025. Users relying on Authenticator to save and fill in passwords must export their data or switch to another platform before the deadline.

The company says the decision is part of its plan to simplify how users manage their credentials by moving everything to Microsoft Edge. Instead of using the Authenticator app for autofill, users will now need to use the Edge browser on their phones.

Microsoft explains that saved passwords will continue to be available through Edge as long as users are signed in with the same Microsoft account. Passwords will be synced automatically and can be accessed by going to Settings > Passwords inside the Edge browser.

The transition will happen in three steps. In June 2025, users will no longer be able to save new passwords in the Authenticator app. In July, autofill will stop working, and any stored payment information will be deleted. By August 1, all saved and generated passwords will be removed from the app and no longer accessible.

For users who do not want to use Edge, Microsoft is providing the option to export passwords. This can be done by opening the Authenticator app, going to the menu, selecting Settings, then Autofill, and choosing Export Passwords. The exported file can then be saved and used with another password manager. However, payment information cannot be exported and must be manually re-entered in any new tool or browser.

Microsoft confirmed that the Authenticator app will continue to support other important features such as multi-factor authentication, push notifications, biometric approvals, and passkeys. Users who use passkeys for their Microsoft account should keep the app installed and enabled as their passkey provider.
