Microsoft has quietly announced that it will stop adding new features to Microsoft 365 (Office apps) for Windows 10 users, starting in August 2026.
While security updates will continue until October 2028, users will need to upgrade to Windows 11 to access the latest Microsoft 365 features.
The phase-out will occur in stages:
- August 2026: Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, and Current Channel business users stop receiving new features.
- October 13, 2026: Monthly Enterprise Channel users lose feature updates.
- January 12, 2027: Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel users follow.
This comes after Microsoft reversed its earlier decision and agreed to continue security updates for Office apps on Windows 10, but did not disclose that feature updates would end starting in 2026.
With Windows 10 set to reach end of support on October 14, 2025, Microsoft is urging users to upgrade to Windows 11. Still, a significant number of devices continue to run Windows 10, despite Windows 11 now leading as the most used desktop OS. For those staying on Windows 10, Microsoft will offer one additional year of free security updates—if users enable Windows Backup.
