Microsoft is experimenting with a more seamless passwordless experience by integrating 1Password’s passkey support directly into Windows 11.
The new feature is currently available only to Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel and requires installation of the 1Password beta app.
This collaboration aims to streamline the use of passkeys by allowing users to store and access them through a plugin credential manager. Once enabled in system settings, users can quickly sign in to supported websites using Windows Hello — whether that’s facial recognition, fingerprint, or a PIN. The setup process is simple: install the 1Password beta, head to Settings > Passkeys > Advanced options, and toggle on the new integration.
Users can then use existing passkeys or save new ones directly through compatible websites. When creating a new passkey, authentication with Windows Hello is required to finalize and store the credential securely.
This plugin system marks another step in Microsoft’s push toward a passwordless future. By opening integration to credential manager developers, the company encourages broader adoption of passkeys, which are considered more secure and phishing-resistant than traditional passwords.
Developers interested in integrating similar support can refer to Microsoft’s official documentation at aka.ms/3P-Plugin-API.
