Microsoft has asked iPhone users to manually re-enter their login credentials after a major outage disrupted access to Outlook.com and Hotmail accounts on Monday.
The company said users around the world experienced intermittent sign-in problems that stopped them from accessing mailboxes through Outlook.com. Some affected users were also unexpectedly signed out and shown “too many requests” error messages.
Microsoft later restored service and confirmed systems had returned to normal by Monday evening. However, users accessing their accounts through the default Mail app on iOS devices now need to manually sign in again to resume syncing emails.
To fix the issue, Microsoft advised iPhone users to open Settings, go to Mail, select Accounts, choose the affected email account, and re-enter their password. After saving the updated credentials, users should reopen the Mail app and confirm messages are syncing normally.
Microsoft has not yet revealed the exact cause of the outage. Earlier updates only blamed the disruption on a “recently introduced change.”
The company also did not specify how many users or regions were impacted, but classified the event as “service degradation,” meaning the service remained online but with noticeable issues for users.
This is the latest in a series of recent Microsoft email-related problems. In March, the company fixed an Exchange Online outage that blocked access to mailboxes and calendars across several Outlook services.
More recently, Microsoft also resolved a bug that stopped some Classic Outlook users from sending or replying to Outlook.com emails, which triggered delivery failure errors.
