Microsoft has officially closed its Movies & TV store on Xbox consoles and Windows PCs, ending the ability to purchase new movies or TV shows through the Microsoft Store.

As of now, users can no longer buy new video content, but previously purchased movies and shows will still be accessible via the Movies & TV app on Windows and Xbox. Microsoft confirmed that downloads will remain available on Windows in HD quality, and playback is restricted to Microsoft’s app — unless your content is part of Movies Anywhere in the U.S.

“Downloads will continue to be available on Windows and in HD max resolution,” Microsoft stated, adding that no refunds will be provided for past purchases.

This closure marks the end of a nearly two-decade run, starting with the Zune Marketplace in 2006, later evolving into Xbox Video in 2012, and finally the Movies & TV app in 2015. It also follows Microsoft’s shutdown of its Groove Music service in 2017.

Going forward, users will need to rely on third-party streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, or Apple TV for their movie and TV purchases on Windows and Xbox.
