Microsoft has stepped in after Windows 11 users complained about intrusive McAfee trial advertisements appearing when they connected LG monitors to their computers.
The company confirmed that LG has agreed to immediately disable the McAfee pop-up notifications delivered through its LG Monitor App Installer.
The issue gained attention after users reported that connecting certain LG monitors to Windows 11 triggered an automatic driver update process. During that process, Windows quietly installed LG driver updates along with the LG Monitor App Installer without clearly asking for the user’s permission. Once installed, the software displayed large promotional pop-ups encouraging users to install a McAfee antivirus trial and other LG applications. Reports of this behavior have been circulating since 2024.
Responding to the complaints, Microsoft’s Windows chief, Pavan Davuluri, said LG has agreed to remove the McAfee pop-up from the LG Monitor App Installer immediately. He also said Microsoft will continue working with its hardware partners to improve the Windows experience and reduce unwanted software behavior.
LG defended its approach by stating that McAfee is never installed automatically and requires users to explicitly approve the installation. According to the company, the LG Monitor App Installer is distributed through Microsoft’s official Windows distribution process, where McAfee is offered only as an optional download. LG also emphasized that its installer does not collect, access, or transmit users’ personal data.
However, many users criticized the experience because the LG software itself was installed automatically after connecting the monitor, creating an unexpected pathway for promotional notifications. While McAfee was optional, users argued that they never expected monitor software to install and advertise additional applications in the first place.
LG is not the only hardware manufacturer using automatic software installation. Similar behavior has been seen with Dell, whose Alienware monitors can automatically install the Alienware Command Center application when connected to Windows PCs.
