Microsoft has mistakenly marked an unresolved Windows Firewall bug as “fixed”, confusing Windows 11 users and IT administrators.
The company has now clarified that a fix is still in development and will arrive in a future update.
Earlier this month, Microsoft warned that users may see recurring Windows Firewall errors in the Event Viewer after installing the June 2025 Windows 11 preview update. The issue shows up as Event ID 2042 in Windows Firewall With Advanced Security, displaying the message:
"Config Read Failed" with message 'More data is available'These error events appear every time Windows is restarted, but Microsoft stresses that they can be safely ignored and do not indicate any functional issue with the firewall. Instead, they are tied to an upcoming feature that hasn’t been fully implemented yet.
Marked as Fixed—By Mistake
On July Patch Tuesday, Microsoft erroneously updated the issue status to “Resolved.” However, the company quickly reversed this, stating:
“This disclosure was mistakenly updated to Resolved status on July 8. A resolution for this issue is planned to be included in an update to be released in the coming weeks. We apologize for any inconvenience or confusion.”Microsoft says that it is working on a fix, which will be released in an upcoming update.
