Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has flagged potential hacking attempts targeting the WhatsApp accounts of U.S. officials from both the Biden and Trump administrations.
The company linked the attacks to the Iranian hacker group APT42, known for deploying surveillance software on victims’ mobile devices.
The hackers, posing as technical support for major tech companies, were blocked after suspicious activity was reported, with no evidence suggesting any accounts were compromised.
The targeted individuals included political and diplomatic figures from the U.S., Israel, Iran, and the UK.
