Meta announced on Monday that it is expanding the number of topics available through Threads’ Communities feature, a move that could draw users away from platforms like Reddit and X.

Threads initially launched more than 100 communities in October, covering interests such as basketball, television, K-pop, and books. With the latest update, the platform now hosts over 200 communities, including new team-specific spaces like Lakers Threads, Knicks Threads, and Spurs Threads.

Meta is also testing community flairs, a feature familiar to Reddit users. Flairs appear beneath a user’s name and can be customized to reflect personal interests or roles. For example, NBA fans can display their favorite team, while users in book-related communities can identify themselves as authors.

In addition, Threads is experimenting with a “Champion” badge, designed to recognize highly engaged community members. According to Meta, the badge is currently being awarded to a limited number of users who are both influential and actively participate in discussions.
