Meta has started testing a premium subscription on Instagram in a few countries, according to TechCrunch.
The new plan, called Instagram Plus, offers users access to extra features that are not available in the free version. This comes shortly after Meta shared its plans to explore subscription options across Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp.
One of the main features allows users to view someone’s Story without the creator knowing. Subscribers can also check how many times their own Stories have been rewatched. This gives users more insight into how their content is performing.
Instagram Plus also lets users create multiple custom audience lists for Stories. Instead of just using the Close Friends option, people can now organize followers into different groups and choose exactly who can see each Story.
Another feature allows users to extend their Story for an extra 24 hours. They can also highlight one Story per week, pushing it to the front so more followers notice it.
Subscribers will also get access to an animated Superlike for Stories. In addition, they can quickly search their Story viewer list to see if a specific person has viewed their content without scrolling through the entire list.
Meta has not officially confirmed all the countries where the test is happening, but reports suggest it is being tested in Mexico, Japan, and the Philippines. Pricing depends on the region, with costs ranging from around $1 to $2 per month.
It is important to note that Instagram Plus is different from Meta Verified. Meta Verified is mainly for creators and businesses and includes features like a verified badge and account protection. Instagram Plus is aimed more at regular users who want extra control and features.
While this move could help Meta increase revenue, some users are already showing concern about having to pay for more features. At the same time, other platforms like Snapchat and X have shown that people are willing to pay for added benefits. Snapchat+, for example, has already reached millions of subscribers.
