Microsoft has recently initiated the rollout of a tabs feature in Notepad for Windows 11.
Notepad, a venerable text editor in the Windows ecosystem, is a trusted tool for many users. However, handling multiple tabs efficiently within Notepad can sometimes pose a challenge, especially when looking to close several tabs at once.
While Notepad in Windows 11 doesn’t offer a native “close all tabs” feature like some other applications, there are effective methods you can employ to streamline your workflow.
Using Keyboard Shortcuts
Keyboard shortcuts are the quickest way to navigate and close tabs in Notepad:
- Ctrl + W: This widely-used shortcut closes the current tab. You can repeat this command to close multiple tabs sequentially.
Alternative Methods
If you have numerous tabs open and wish to expedite the closing process:
- Ctrl + F4: Pressing this combination repeatedly will close each tab, one after the other.

In conclusion, while Notepad in Windows 11 doesn’t provide a direct way to close all tabs simultaneously, mastering the use of keyboard shortcuts like Ctrl + W and Ctrl + F4 can significantly streamline your workflow. These methods allow you to efficiently manage and close multiple tabs in Notepad, ensuring a productive editing experience.

There’s another way to close multiple open tabs is you have left the “Open content from the previous session” open for an extended period (as I had done and essentially closing them individually becomes tedious). If Notepad is pinned to the Task Bar, use the “-” option to close to the window only, then right click on the taskbar to open the Task Manager, select “Notepad” and click ‘end task’, making sure before you have chosen in the Notepad options: “When Notepad Starts – 2end option Start new session and discard unsaved changes”, if that’s what you want, otherwise leave as ‘Continue Previous Session’ if you want to continue accumulating new tabs (all options under the Gear icon in Notepad itself). This way you clear all the old Notepad tabs in prior sessions and it will now keep only those in the current session.
