Twenty years ago, home entertainment entered a new era.
On June 20, 2006, the first titles released on Blu-ray Disc arrived on store shelves across the United States, officially introducing consumers to a new generation of high-definition physical media.
Designed to deliver sharper video quality, improved audio performance, and greater storage capacity than DVDs, Blu-ray quickly became the preferred format for movie enthusiasts and collectors. The technology played a major role in the transition to high-definition home entertainment during the late 2000s and early 2010s.
Today, however, the future of physical media is uncertain. Many electronics manufacturers have stopped producing Blu-ray players, while major retailers continue to reduce or eliminate disc sales in favor of streaming services and digital downloads.
Despite the shift toward digital platforms, Blu-ray remains popular among collectors and cinephiles who value superior picture quality, lossless audio, bonus features, and long-term ownership of their media libraries.
As Blu-ray celebrates its 20th anniversary, it also marks what could become the final major physical media format in the history of home entertainment.
