Facebook Messenger is celebrating its 15th anniversary, marking 15 years since the standalone messaging app was launched in 2011.
Messenger was introduced on August 9, 2011, as a separate mobile app designed to make messaging faster and easier. At launch, users could message Facebook friends and phone contacts, create group conversations, share photos and even send their location. The app was initially released for iPhone and Android.
What started as a relatively simple messaging app quickly grew into one of Facebook’s most important communication platforms. Over the years, Messenger added features such as video calling, GIFs, stickers, group conversations and other ways to make chats more expressive.
The growth was rapid. By November 2014, Facebook said more than 500 million people were using Messenger every month. By the end of 2015, that number had reached 800 million monthly users.
Messenger also expanded beyond smartphones. In 2012, Facebook introduced a desktop version of Messenger for Windows, allowing users to receive and respond to chats while working on their computers.
The company continued rebuilding the app as messaging habits changed. In 2020, Facebook said Messenger had become increasingly complex as more features were added, leading to Project LightSpeed, a major effort to make the app faster, smaller and simpler.
Messenger has continued evolving into more than a basic text-chat service, becoming a platform for personal conversations, group chats, calls and multimedia sharing. In 2021, Meta celebrated Messenger’s 10th birthday with new features, highlighting how far the service had come in its first decade.
