Google has announced a new AI-powered Inbox for Gmail that aims to make email less overwhelming and more useful.

The new feature gives users a clear overview of important tasks and updates, helping them focus on what actually matters instead of digging through dozens of emails. Along with this, Google is also introducing AI Overviews in Gmail search and a new Proofread tool to improve writing quality.

The new AI Inbox comes with a dedicated tab that shows two main types of information. One part highlights emails that need action, such as reminders about unpaid bills, upcoming appointments, or follow-up requests. Instead of reading the full email, users can quickly understand what needs to be done and when. This is meant to save time and reduce the chances of missing something important.

Another part of the AI Inbox focuses on updates users may want to catch up on. These include things like order deliveries, return status updates, and financial notifications. Gmail groups these updates into categories such as purchases and finances, making it easier to see related information in one place. Google says the regular inbox will still be available, and users can switch the AI Inbox view on or off whenever they want.

Gmail search is also getting a major upgrade with AI Overviews. Users can now search their inbox using natural language questions instead of exact keywords. For example, someone can ask who gave them a service quote last year, and Gmail will scan relevant emails to show a clear answer at the top. The AI only uses the user’s own emails to generate these results and does not rely on outside data.

Google is also adding a Proofread feature that helps users improve their email writing. The tool suggests clearer wording, better sentence structure, and correct word usage. It can recommend simpler phrases, fix common grammar mistakes, and help make messages more direct and professional. The feature works with a single click and is similar to popular tools like Grammarly.

While some of these new features are launching first for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, Google is also expanding access to several AI tools for all Gmail users. Features like Help Me Write, email thread summaries, and smart suggested replies are now available to everyone. Google says all AI features in Gmail are optional and that personal emails are processed in a secure and isolated environment without being used to train its core AI models.
