Google says its artificial intelligence tools are dramatically changing how security vulnerabilities are discovered and fixed, revealing that the company patched more flaws in Chrome over the past month than it did during the previous two years combined.

In a blog post released on Thursday, Google said it fixed 1,072 security vulnerabilities across the last two Chrome releases, versions 149 and 150, both launched in June. That figure exceeds the 1,036 security bugs patched across the previous 23 Chrome versions released over the past two years.

The milestone highlights how AI is beginning to reshape cybersecurity, a trend experts have predicted since the rise of large language models (LLMs). Researchers have long warned that AI would enable both defenders and attackers to discover software flaws at a much faster pace, making automation a critical part of modern security.

Google backed its announcement with data published in a new white paper describing how the company is using AI to improve vulnerability detection and accelerate security fixes. The report includes a chart showing a sharp increase in the number of bugs identified and patched in recent Chrome releases. For comparison, Chrome 126 was released in June 2024, while Chrome 149 and 150 became available last month. Google refers to each browser release as a “milestone.”

Doug Turner, Chrome’s Director of Engineering, said AI has fundamentally changed the economics of cybersecurity by turning vulnerability discovery into an automated, industrial-scale process.

According to Turner, Google’s Gemini AI models are helping engineers identify and fix security weaknesses before attackers can exploit them, allowing the company to stay ahead of emerging threats while making Chrome more secure with every update.
