After a brief pause, Google is once again expanding access to its AI-powered “Ask Photos” feature in Google Photos, now with improved performance and faster results.

Powered by Google’s Gemini AI models, the tool allows users to search their photo libraries using natural, conversational queries, such as asking for “photos from our beach trip last summer” or “pictures of my dog wearing a red collar.”

Earlier this month, a Google Photos team member admitted on X (formerly Twitter) that the feature was falling short in key areas like speed, quality, and overall user experience. In response, Google temporarily scaled back its rollout and began working on refinements.

In a new blog post, Google announced that it has listened to user feedback and made specific upgrades to the search experience. One major improvement is the ability to return quick results for simple searches like “beach” or “dogs,” while more complex requests are handled in the background using the Gemini models. This means users will see faster, more immediate responses for common queries without compromising the accuracy of deeper searches.

Google also confirmed that Ask Photos is now moving beyond its limited early access phase. The feature is beginning to roll out more broadly to eligible users in the United States, though the company hasn’t specified an exact timeline for full availability.
