Google Maps now shows “Gulf of America” instead of “Gulf of Mexico” for users in the U.S.
This change happened after the Trump administration officially renamed the body of water between Mexico and Florida. Google follows the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) for place names.
In Mexico, the name remains “Gulf of Mexico,” while users in other countries will see both names. Google decides which name to show based on a user’s location, mobile settings, and network.

Apple Maps and other mapping services like MapQuest have not made this change.
However, Google’s Waze app shows both names when searching for “Gulf of Mexico” but does not recognize “Gulf of America.”
