Google Home is getting a new Gemini-powered automation feature that allows smart home routines to start based on what security cameras can see.

With this update, supported cameras can understand specific visual events and trigger actions automatically inside the home.

For example, if a camera sees someone arriving home with a yoga mat, Google Home could dim the lights and play relaxing music. The idea is to make smart home automation more natural by letting users describe what they want the camera to watch for, instead of setting up complicated rules manually.

Google says the new feature works through visual insights. Users can describe the exact event they want to use as a trigger and then choose which indoor or outdoor cameras should look for it. Once the camera detects that event, Google Home can start the selected automation.

The feature currently supports Nest cameras and some third-party cameras with Gemini Built-In. For now, it is available only in English for users in the United States who are part of the Google Home Public Preview program.

Users also need to enable AI descriptions for their cameras through Gemini for Home camera features. In addition, the feature requires a Google Home Premium Advanced subscription, which costs $20 per month or $200 per year.

Google says users should describe objects and events that are clearly visible to the camera. The company also warns that the camera needs a short time to process what it sees, so the feature should not be used for instant alerts, urgent situations, or security and safety purposes.

This new camera-based automation feature is part of several Gemini for Home updates announced by Google. The company is also improving voice command support and overall stability as it continues to expand Gemini’s role inside Google Home.
