Epic Games is bringing more artificial intelligence features to Fortnite by giving creators access to 36 AI-powered characters with unique voices and personalities.
Starting July 30, developers using Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) will be able to add these interactive NPCs to their custom experiences, allowing players to have more natural conversations with familiar Fortnite characters.
The lineup includes some of the game’s most recognizable faces, such as Agent Jonesy, Peely, Fishstick, and Cuddle Team Leader. According to Epic Games, each character has a consistent voice and personality, making them feel more believable during in-game interactions.
The announcement follows Epic’s earlier experiment with an AI-powered Darth Vader character that used the voice of the late James Earl Jones with approval from his estate. While players quickly found ways to make the character say inappropriate things, Epic responded with updates to improve its behavior. Soon after that test, the company revealed plans to let creators build their own AI-powered characters.
Epic says the voices for the new AI personas were created using performances recorded by independent professional actors. The actors agreed to let their recordings be used to train voice models that generate spoken responses for these large language model (LLM)-powered Fortnite characters. This approach allows Epic to offer interactive AI voices while using performances that were specifically licensed for creator-made experiences.
The new AI voices will become available to Fortnite creators on July 30, opening the door for more dynamic storytelling, quests, and player interactions across custom islands. Epic also hinted that it may eventually introduce AI characters using the voices of well-known actors who have appeared in Fortnite, though those additions would require the necessary approvals and licensing agreements first.
