A major data breach at credit check company 700Credit has exposed the personal information of at least 5.6 million people across the United States.

The stolen data includes names, home addresses, dates of birth, and Social Security numbers, raising serious concerns about identity theft and fraud.

700Credit is a Michigan-based company that provides credit checks and identity verification services to auto dealerships nationwide. In a statement posted on its website, the company said the breach occurred in October and was caused by an unidentified bad actor who gained unauthorized access to its systems.

According to the Michigan attorney general’s office, the hacker accessed personal data that had been collected from auto dealers between May and October 2025. The breach affected consumers whose information was processed during that period, though the company has not said exactly how the attack happened.

700Credit stated that it is now sending notification letters by mail to individuals whose data was compromised. The letters include information about the breach and offer free credit monitoring services to help affected people protect themselves.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel urged people not to ignore these notices. She said it is important for anyone affected by the breach to act quickly to secure their personal information. Steps such as placing a credit freeze or using credit monitoring services can help reduce the risk of fraud and identity theft.
