Microchip Technology Incorporated, a major American chipmaker, suffered a cyberattack that disrupted operations across several of its manufacturing facilities.
The company, headquartered in Chandler, Arizona, serves approximately 123,000 customers in various sectors, including industrial, automotive, consumer, aerospace, defense, communications, and computing.
The cyber incident has forced some of Microchip Technology’s manufacturing facilities to operate at reduced capacity, impacting the company’s ability to fulfill orders. In response, the company took immediate action to manage the situation by shutting down certain systems and isolating the affected areas following the breach.
In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Tuesday, Microchip Technology disclosed that it detected potentially suspicious activity on August 17, 2024. The company began assessing, containing, and remediating the unauthorized activity upon detection. By August 19, 2024, the company confirmed that an unauthorized party had disrupted the use of certain servers and business operations.
Microchip Technology is currently working with external cybersecurity experts to evaluate the full extent and impact of the cyberattack. Efforts are underway to restore affected IT systems and return to normal business operations. However, the company has stated that the full scope, nature, and impact of the incident are not yet fully understood.
While the company has not officially confirmed the nature of the attack, the SEC filing hints at the possibility of ransomware being involved. No ransomware group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and a spokesperson for Microchip Technology was not immediately available for comment.
