ChatGPT has reached a major milestone, crossing 3 billion dollars in total consumer spending on mobile devices worldwide.

The estimate comes from app intelligence firm Appfigures and includes spending on both iOS and Android since the app launched in May 2023, when it was first available only on iPhones.

Most of this spending happened in 2025. According to the data, users spent about 2.48 billion dollars on the ChatGPT mobile app this year alone. That is a 408 percent increase compared with 487 million dollars spent in 2024. In its first year, 2023, ChatGPT earned just 42.9 million dollars, before seeing massive growth the following year.

The speed of this growth stands out when compared with other popular apps. ChatGPT took just 31 months to reach 3 billion dollars in consumer spending. By comparison, TikTok, the highest-earning app overall, took 58 months to hit the same level. Streaming services also took longer, with Disney+ reaching 3 billion dollars in 42 months and HBO Max doing so in 46 months.

Among other AI apps, xAI’s Grok is the closest competitor in terms of revenue growth. Grok launched in late 2023 for X Premium Plus subscribers and later became more widely available. When comparing AI apps from the point they began charging users, Grok’s spending curve most closely matches ChatGPT’s pace, although ChatGPT remains far ahead overall.

While the 3 billion dollar figure shows strong consumer demand, it is only one measure of ChatGPT’s business potential. Most mobile revenue comes from subscriptions, including the 20 dollar per month ChatGPT Plus plan and the 200 dollar per month ChatGPT Pro option for advanced users. However, AI companies also generate income through developer tools, enterprise services, and possibly advertising in the future.
