A bystander who bravely wrestled a gun away from one of the attackers during the Bondi Beach shooting has been identified as 43-year-old Ahmed al Ahmed.
Verified video footage shows Mr Ahmed charging at the gunman, grabbing his weapon and turning it back on him, forcing the attacker to flee. His actions likely saved many lives.
Mr Ahmed, a fruit shop owner and father of two, is currently recovering in hospital after undergoing surgery for gunshot wounds to his arm and hand, his family told 7News Australia. Reports from relatives vary, with his parents saying he was shot four or five times.
The attack took place on Sunday night during a Hanukkah celebration attended by more than 1,000 people. Fifteen people were killed, and dozens were injured. Police have declared the shooting a terrorist attack aimed at the Jewish community.
Speaking to 7News, Mr Ahmed’s cousin, Mustafa, called him “a hero,” saying he was shot twice while trying to stop the attacker. He added that Ahmed was conscious and stable, though doctors were still monitoring his condition.
Mr Ahmed’s parents, who travelled from Syria to Sydney a few months ago after being separated from their son since 2006, said they were praying for his recovery. His father said his son acted without thinking about religion or background, adding that in Australia, all citizens are equal.
