Bluesky is adding group chats to its platform as the social network continues to build more private and community-focused features.
The new feature is rolling out now and allows users to create group conversations with up to 50 people. However, Bluesky’s direct messages remain limited in some ways, as users cannot send photos or videos inside DMs yet.
Group chat creators will be able to manage who can join their conversations. They can also create invite links and share them with others, including through Bluesky posts. Users will also have controls over who can invite them to group chats, with options such as everyone, only people they follow, or no one.
The update comes as Bluesky is preparing a bigger community feature later this year. The company plans to introduce smaller public, invite-only, or private spaces where users can gather around specific topics and interests. These communities will have their own feeds, making them similar to subreddits or Facebook Groups.
The move shows Bluesky is trying to become more than just a public posting platform. By adding group chats and upcoming communities, the company appears to be focusing on closer conversations, smaller groups, and more controlled online spaces.
