Bluesky, the decentralized social media platform, has suspended its service in Mississippi following the enforcement of the state’s new age verification law, HB 1126.

The law requires online platforms to verify the ages of all users and obtain parental consent for those under 18. Companies failing to comply face fines of up to $10,000 per violation.

Bluesky said the requirements force platforms to collect and store sensitive personal data, such as government IDs, which goes against its commitment to user privacy. The company argued that compliance would be costly and would disproportionately affect smaller platforms, while larger tech companies could absorb the expenses more easily.

The decision comes after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to block the law, despite concerns that it may be “likely unconstitutional.” As a result, Bluesky users in Mississippi will see a message explaining the block, while legal challenges to the legislation continue.
