Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, is investigating a suspected major security breach after billions of dollars in digital assets were transferred from its hot wallets in what could become the largest cryptocurrency hack in history.
Blockchain monitoring platforms have identified suspicious transactions involving approximately $3.3 billion to $5.8 billion in cryptocurrency across multiple wallets and networks. However, Binance has not officially confirmed the breach or verified the total amount of funds potentially stolen.
The incident came to light after blockchain analysts detected large transfers from several Binance hot wallets to newly created cryptocurrency addresses. According to on-chain investigations, billions of dollars in Ethereum, Bitcoin, USDT, USDC and other digital assets were moved within a relatively short period.
Binance confirmed that it was investigating reports of a potential security issue, saying its security teams were urgently reviewing the available information. The exchange also reassured customers that their funds were safe and promised to provide updates through its official communication channels.
We are working non-stop to resolve this issue. Binance will cover all losses. As a precaution, all deposits and withdrawals are temporarily suspended while our team conducts security checks, freezes funds, and works with law enforcement. We are working around the clock and will share a full post-mortem once the investigation is complete. Please rely only on official Binance channels for updates. This is an industry-wide effort, and we are grateful to partners across the ecosystem who have moved quickly to help freeze affected assets. We will continue to share verified updates through official Binance channels. User funds are safe.

The suspected incident prompted an immediate response from major cryptocurrency companies. Tether confirmed that it had frozen more than 1.567 billion USDT associated with the incident, while Circle froze more than 800 million USDC. Ripple also reportedly froze approximately $200 million in related assets, bringing the total value of frozen cryptocurrency to around $2.54 billion, according to Binance’s reported figures.
Former Binance CEO and co-founder Changpeng Zhao, widely known as CZ, described the incident as an apparent hack. Although he no longer manages Binance, Zhao said he expects all customer funds to be fully covered, noting that he remains a shareholder in the company.
The security incident has also triggered concerns across cryptocurrency markets. Bitcoin dropped below $78,000, reaching a six-week low of approximately $77,646, while Ethereum fell to around $2,238, according to market data reported on Friday. Binance’s native BNB token also recorded significant losses.
Binance temporarily paused withdrawals while its security teams conducted checks, stating that services would resume once the security issue was resolved.
If confirmed, the incident could surpass the $1.5 billion Bybit cryptocurrency theft in February 2025, which was previously considered the largest confirmed crypto exchange hack.
Binance has urged users to remain alert to phishing attempts and impersonation scams, warning them not to click suspicious links, trust unofficial messages or share account credentials with anyone claiming to represent the exchange.
