Frank Caprio, the Rhode Island judge affectionately known as the “nicest judge in the world,” has died at the age of 88 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Caprio became a global sensation through his long-running TV show Caught in Providence, where his compassionate approach to justice won the hearts of millions. Clips of his rulings—often filled with kindness and empathy—went viral on social media, amassing billions of views and earning multiple Emmy nominations.
The judge announced his pancreatic cancer diagnosis in December 2023 and underwent months of chemotherapy and radiation treatment. Despite his courageous fight, Caprio passed away on August 20, 2025. Just a day before his death, he shared a heartfelt video from his hospital bed asking for prayers.
Tributes poured in following his passing. Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee ordered state flags to be flown at half-mast, calling him a “Rhode Island treasure.” Caprio’s family remembered him as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend who touched countless lives with his compassion both inside and outside the courtroom.
Appointed in 1985 as a Providence Municipal Court judge, Caprio served nearly four decades before retiring in 2023. His legacy endures as a reminder that justice, at its best, can be delivered with both fairness and humanity.
