Amazon has announced it will officially shut down its stand-alone Freevee app by August 2025, according to an in-app notice sent to users.
Viewers are now being directed to access Freevee’s free, ad-supported content directly through the Prime Video platform.
“Prime Video is the new exclusive home for Freevee TV shows, movies and Live TV,” the message reads. “Continue watching your favorite Free Originals and our library of hit movies, shows, and live TV on Prime Video for free, no subscription needed.”
The move follows Amazon’s confirmation in November 2024 that it would phase out the Freevee brand and consolidate its streaming content under the Prime Video umbrella. The change is part of Amazon’s strategy to simplify its streaming offerings and centralize content on a single platform.
Originally launched in 2019 as IMDb TV, Freevee was rebranded in 2022 and is available in the U.S., U.K., Germany, and Austria. Popular shows like Jury Duty, Bosch: Legacy, and Neighbours will continue to be available under the “Watch for Free” section on Prime Video.
The announcement comes amid growing consumer interest in free streaming services. A recent Nielsen report found that services like Pluto TV, Roku Channel, and Tubi now account for a significant portion of U.S. TV viewing, helping free streaming platforms surpass cable and network TV in total viewership for the first time in May.
